Myra Wolfgang Awards 2020 (2021)

djj

Project Description

The 2020 (2021) Myra Wolfgang Awards will be DJJ’s second annual fundraising gala and awards ceremony. In 2019, we established the Wolfgang Awards to honor those who have shown principled tenacity in pursuit of justice. The Awards are named after Myra Wolfgang z”l, a pioneering Jewish labor organizer. This year we will honor two leaders in the Detroit community, who will be identified in the coming weeks.
Now an online gathering, the event will include an awards ceremony, arts and culture presentations, and a silent auction. If this were going to be an in-person event, we would aim to make every part of the event as close to zero-waste as possible, including the food, the event program books, the physical awards, and the silent auction materials. But because we’ll be doing it online this year, we plan to award “green gift bags” to some of our supporters, while continuing our commitment to sustainability in program practices. Some of our ideas for the “green gift bags” include items like subscriptions to Midtown Composting and compostable single-use dishware for covid-safe picnics. Additionally, we plan to print all program books on recycled paper.
While we won’t be meeting in person this year, we want to both demonstrate our continued commitment to sustainability, and to seed sustainability practices in our group of attendees. This grant from Hazon could make that possible.
